GIL Express

GIL Express is a service offered by Savannah State's Asa H. Gordon Library in which books are shared among libraries within the University System of Georgia (USG). The service is an innovative resource sharing initiative that allows students, faculty, and staff access to all eligible circulating books at all USG libraries. GIL Express FAQS

What's the difference between GIL Express and Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

GIL Express is used to share books among participating institutions in the University System of Georgia, while ILL is used to share different types of materials with libraries around the world. Before submitting an ILL request for a book, please be sure that it is not available through GIL Express. 

How long may I keep an item borrowed through GIL Express?

GIL Express items circulate for 4 weeks, with the option for up to 2 renewal periods (typically 4 weeks each). 

How many GIL Express requests may I make?

All patrons may have up to 50 requests at once.

What materials are available for borrowing?

  • Books

What materials are not available for borrowing?

The materials below are typically not available through GIL Express.

  • Reference books
  • Microfilm or microfiche
  • Entire sets or issues
  • Newspapers
  • Audiovisual materials/computer software
  • Best sellers/new books
  • Fragile, bulky, or special collection materials

Overdue Material: If you have GIL Express material from any of the USG libraries that is overdue, your borrowing privileges will be blocked. This block will be effective at all libraries including your Home Library (SSU) and you may be blocked in your home institution's Registrar/Bursar system. You will also be subjected to any late fees or fines charged by the lending institution.

Interlibrary Loan

ILL World

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered by Savannah State's Asa H. Gordon Library in which we share resources with other libraries around the world. ILL services can be used by students, faculty, and staff at Savannah State to order and borrow various materials that are not available at Asa H. Gordon Library and not available through GIL Express. How long may I keep an item borrowed through ILL?

The loan time is set by the lending library; however, books and other items can typically be kept for approximately 4 weeks with the option of 1 renewal. Newspaper, magazine, and journal articles are typically sent as a digital or paper copy, which can be kept indefinitely.

While the materials listed below are typically not able to be borrowed through ILL, exceptions are sometimes made by lending libraries.

Is there a fee for using the ILL service?

Any fees the library is charged by other libraries for loans or copies are not charged to you. However, if you lose a borrowed item or damage it, the owning library will determine how much is owed for the item and you will be billed for that amount.
