State Government Information

The traditional ways to get statutes and code sections are (a) to pull the book off the shelf of your own library, (b) to borrow the appropriate volume from another library or (c) to get copies by calling the document delivery service in a law school or bar association library. These are all still excellent ways of getting statutes and code sections.

Now you can also get statutory Code sections free online. States post their Codes and recent statutes on the Internet, either directly or through a designated publisher. Suggested sites include:

GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys) provides free online access to official publications from all three branches of the Federal Government. Through FDsys, you are able to Search for specific information or browse by collection, Congressional committee, date, or Government author.

Contains thousands of publications, virtually all include full text. Many types of publications are included: newspapers (in English, other languages, and translations of international papers), legal news, general interest magazines, medical journals, trade publications, company financial information, transcripts, wire service reports, government publications (such as the federal case law, U.S. Code, Code of Federal Regulations, Congressional Testimony, etc.), law reviews, and reference works.

Landmark U.S. Legal Cases
This page is not a search form, but rather a list of direct links to Landmark Supreme Court cases in US History. The cases are sorted alphabetically by topic, then by year, then alphabetically by party name. This page is imporant because simply using the Federal & State Cases search form to search a frequently-referenced case such as Roe v. Wade may bring up many results.
