Information Literacy and Instruction

Information Literacy is the ability to know when information is needed, and to find, evaluate, and use the appropriate information ethically.

Six Steps to Successful Library Instruction

  1. students in classRequest
Ask the instructor to complete the Library Instruction Request Form. The form encourages the instructor and collaborating librarian to properly consider what specific skills and/or resources to include in the session.

  2. Schedule
Contact library administration to schedule the session on the events calendar.

  3. Define
Define learning outcomes with the instructor on record that correlate with the AACU Information Literacy Value Rubric adopted by the University, the recently updated Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education,  and those identified by year-of-study. This will give you, the instructor, and the students clear expectations for the class. Outcomes will be used later to access student learning.

  4. Create
Create a LibGuide or tutorial to enhance your class and to accomodate different learning styles. These are useful for students at their point of need. They may also be used asynchonously by students who are unable to attend the library instruction session.

  5. Assess
Create active learning assignments that allow students to engage with the material. Use these assignments to assess whether students are meeting overall outcomes for the class. Use the assessment to modify your class as needed.

  6. Follow-Up
Request that the instructor complete the faculty feedback form.  Share class details and assessment in Desk Tracker so that the Information Literacy Librarian can gather statistics. Add your assessment activity to this LibGuide so that your colleagues may adapt it for their classes.
