Citing Sources

Tips for citing articles in APA style:

  • Library databases often have built-in citation generators. Look for a "CITE" link on the article's information page.
  • Treat auto-generated citations as a template. Review them carefully and make corrections as needed.
  • Usually, digital articles from library databases are the same as the printed versions. Therefore, cite the article as if it were a newspaper, magazine, or journal; not as a website.

Example APA Citations

Here are some example citations from the Purdue OWL:

An article from a journal (paginated by issue):

Scruton, R. (1996). The eclipse of listening. The New Criterion, 15(3), 5-13.

An article from a magazine:

Henry, W. A., III. (1990, April 9). Making the grade in today's schools. Time, 135, 28-31.

An article from a newspaper (use 'p.' for one page, 'pp.' for multiple pages):

Schultz, S. (2005, December 28). Calls made to strengthen state energy policies. The Country Today, pp. 1A, 2A.
