GIL Express

GIL Express is a service offered by Savannah State's Asa H. Gordon Library in which books are shared among libraries within the University System of Georgia (USG). The service is an innovative resource sharing initiative that allows students, faculty, and staff access to all eligible circulating books at all USG libraries. Books can be ordered from, returned to, and picked up at any USG institution. 

How to Submit a GIL Express Request

To submit a request, sign into your library account first.    

  • Search for the title you need in the GIL-Find@USG catalog.  If Savannah State University does not have the book you need, search the GIL Universal catalog. Click on the drop down arrow next to "Savannah State University" and select "University System of Georgia."
  • Enter the search terms in GIL Universal catalog search box and click search.  When the results display, click on "Check Holdings availability from other USG libraries" for the title you are interested in.
  • Under Get It, in the "More USG Libraries/GIL Express Request" field, click on "Show Libraries ()" to see the names of the USG libraries owing the title.
  • Select an institution where the book is available by clicking on the green "Available" link.  
  • The book details will display "Request Options."  Click on "Request".
  • "Details of the title you requested" will display.
  • Once the request has been submitted a confirmation message will display letting you know that the request was placed and the number of requests ahead of you.  

You will receive an email notice when the item is ready for pick-up.  

Items not picked up within ten days will be returned to the lending library on the eleventh day

 

Interlibrary Loan

ILL World

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered by Savannah State's Asa H. Gordon Library in which we share resources with other libraries around the world. ILL services can be used by students, faculty, and staff at Savannah State to order and borrow various materials that are not available at Asa H. Gordon Library and not available through GIL Express. How long may I keep an item borrowed through ILL?

The loan time is set by the lending library; however, books and other items can typically be kept for approximately 4 weeks with the option of 1 renewal. Newspaper, magazine, and journal articles are typically sent as a digital or paper copy, which can be kept indefinitely.

What materials are available for borrowing?

The materials listed below are commonly available through ILL.

What materials are not available for borrowing?

While the materials listed below are typically not able to be borrowed through ILL, exceptions are sometimes made by lending libraries.

  • Archival or Special Collections materials
  • Audiovisual materials/computer software
  • Bestsellers/new books 
  • Books and articles published very recently
  • Conference papers and proceedings
  • Dissertations and Theses
  • Entire sets or issues of magazines/journals
  • Fragile, bulky, or special collection materials
  • Microfilm or microfiche
  • Newspapers
  • Reference materials
  • Technical standards
Is there a fee for using the ILL service?

Generally, there is no charge for using the ILL service.  Occasionally, the lending library will charge a lending fee for materials they lend.  If there is a lending fee you will be contacted via email to see if you are willing to pay.  All costs for loans or copies are the responsibility of the patron.  â€‹Additionally, if an ILL item is lost or damaged, the lending library will determine the replacement cost, and you will receive an invoice and the total will be added to your account.
