Savannah State University is working to promote student success and to increase retention, progression and graduation of its students. These are goals of the Complete College America and Georgia initiatives, both of which have identified the high cost of textbooks as a barrier to the academic success of students.
As a member of the University System of Georgia's program, Affordable Learning Georgia, we are fostering educational equity and access every day on campus.
Through the implementation of an open textbook in SSU's First Year Experience course, the university saved incoming students $100,000 annually.
Affordable Learning Georgia (ALG) was developed to provide a "one-stop service to help USG faculty and staff identify lower-cost, electronic, free, and Open Educational Resources, building on the cost-effective subscription resources provided by GALILEO and the USG libraries".
